WAC Investigation reveals the Vellar Family mansions

An independent investigation by Wollongong Against Corruption has again exposed ongoing collusion in the planning system at Wollongong Council.

Secretary of WAC Graham Larcombe states: ICAC failed in its investigations into planning at Wollongong City Council. The latest WAC investigation again highlights the necessity for a Royal Commission into corruption in our region. WAC also believes that due to the increasing number of serious irregularities on the draft Local Environmental Plan, the draft plan should be scrapped.

Democracy wins local elections

Mock elections were held in Wollongong on 13 September 2008 following the decision by the NSW state government that Wollongong citizens would not be able to vote in council elections in 2008.

Two candidates turned up on the day - Corruption and Democracy.

Corruption was represented by Dodgie Rodney and scored 1 vote (but tried to buy a few more).

Democracy won hands down.

A Democracy in Crisis

Reg Wilding
29-Jun-2008

Democracy has been hijacked in NSW. It took a few corrupt individuals in our town to reveal the extent of the problem. Their corrupt practices were made possible because democracy has been hijacked by a NSW Labor rightwing faction. A faction who have trashed Labor Party principles in the pursuit of naked personal gain.

The fact that democracy has been trashed in NSW is serious. Government of the people, for the people, by the people, has been replaced by, what ever it takes. This was an arrogant declaration by a prominent NSW Labor right winger which has never been repudiated, it has been embraced. Naked greed has now replaced the light on the hill in NSW, and democracy is the loser.

Should political donations from property developers be banned?

WAC supports the banning of political donations from property developers. Our Wollongong experience shows how democracy can be destroyed when the political process is captured by private interests.

Wollongongs beautiful natural setting between the Illawarra escarpment and the Pacific Ocean conceals the harsh reality of a social and industrial wasteland. Wollongong is a tough town. It is has the highest rate of unemployment in NSW. Many workers are exploited and find themselves in insecure, alienating and low paid work environments. Poverty rates are high and yet proximity to Sydney and its natural amenities links it to Sydney property prices, pushing many people into a housing affordability and rental crisis.

Making Community Democracy Work Conference Resolutions

More than 150 people from across the state attended the inaugural Making Community Democracy Work Conference in Wollongong. Representatives attended from Eurobedella, Shoalhaven, Shellharbour, Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains, Sydney and the North Coast.

Attendees expressed outrage at the level of corruption and how machine politics has destroyed democracy. Keynote speakers John Hatton and Jack Mundey both stated that they believed that the current NSW Government is the most corrupt government since the Askin Government in the 1960s.
